Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose Eco Wood Rings?

The beauty of choosing a handmade wood ring is that by the very nature of wood, each piece is truly unique. Through the skill of specialist craftsmen, we celebrate the magnificence of this natural resource in our stunning, planet-friendly rings, wherever possible using sustainably sourced or salvaged wood and recycled precious metals.

Whether you’re looking for an affordable engagement ring, an eco-friendly wedding ring, or to mark an anniversary or other special occasion, our designs really do capture the spirit and warmth of the wood.

We take enormous pride not just in the quality of our rings, but also in the service that we provide to customers and will always go above and beyond to ensure that you are completely happy with all aspects of your ring.

To find out what others have to say about our products and service please do check out our Testimonials page and Google reviews.

What styles of rings do you offer?

We currently offer three main styles of rings:

  • Metal rings with wood inlays. These are available in a wide range of metals, profiles and widths and can be inlaid with almost any type of wood, including wood that you provide (see FAQs below). Wood is the only material that can be inlaid in metal rings, but we can also set diamonds and other stones in these designs.

  • Bentwood rings. These rings are made entirely from wood (unless you opt for a metal liner too), using thin veneers which are wrapped around the ring, meaning the grain (and therefore intrinsic strength) of the ring is maintained. These rings can be made from almost any type of wood, including wood that you provide and can also be inlaid with just about anything (see FAQs below). We can also include diamonds and other stones by means of a bezel setting.

  • Carbon fibre rings with wood inlays. These rings combine a modern carbon fibre core (super lightweight and strong) with an inlay of wood. We don’t currently work with customer-supplied wood for these designs, but hope you’ll love the range we offer, which includes a stunning whisky barrel oak.

Do you have a shop? Can we meet in person?

Whilst we don't have a physical shop, we do regularly meet customers by appointment and have a good selection of sample rings for you to view. We normally meet in a local farm shop café just outside Beckington, Somerset. Our preference is for midweek daytime meetings if possible, but evening and weekend appointments can be arranged too. Many customers use it as an excuse for a mini-break in Bath, which is just 20 minutes or so away. If you'd like to arrange to meet us then please do complete an online enquiry form and let us know any potential dates that could work for you.

Of course, it’s not essential that we meet, and the vast majority of customers reach their final design through an exchange of emails and ideas. The overwhelming feedback is that the rings look even better in real life than in the photos, which we think is saying something.

Can I customise my wooden ring?

We would love to help you create a ring that is truly special to you. So if you have a piece of wood or some inlay materials that hold special significance for you, then we are happy to discuss how we can incorporate them into a design that tells your story.

Most of our rings can also be customised by adding an inscription.

To start a conversation about your own custom ring please have a read of our guide to creating a custom ring and then complete our online enquiry form with as much detail as possible. We’ll then give your ideas some thought and get back to you as soon as possible to move things forward.

What types of wood do you use?

We work with a wide variety of sustainably-sourced and salvaged woods. If you’d like to use a wood that we don’t already have in stock, then we can help to source that from the UK or overseas.

If you’re thinking of creating your design using wood that holds special significance for you and your partner, we can do that too, subject to the suitability of the wood. For bentwood rings the wood can be either green or seasoned, but it needs to be straight, free from any splits, knots or cracks, and measure at least 30cm x 5cm x 5cm. For metal rings with wood inlays we need a well-seasoned piece of wood (with a moisture level of 10% or less), measuring at least 5cm x 5cm x 5cm. Unfortunately, we’re not yet able to use customer-supplied wood for our carbon fibre range.

There is a charge of £20 to cover the testing and preparation of customer-supplied wood (per order, not per ring).

Please contact us to discuss making a ring from your wood further.

What types of metal do you use?

Our metal rings with wood inlays are available in titanium, yellow gold, white gold, rose gold (9ct and 18ct for all colours), palladium and platinum.

For bentwood rings, we can inlay most types of metals into the rings in the form of either a strip or shavings. This is a lovely way to incorporate materials with meaning to you (for example shavings from an heirloom ring) into your new wood ring design.

If you would like to discuss which metal is most suitable for you please do get in touch.

What can be inlaid inside a wooden ring?

For rings that are made from metal, the only material that can be inlaid is wood (but there are many different types to choose from, or you could even supply your own!).

For bentwood rings, we can inlay almost any material. Popular inlays include crushed stones and crystals, metal strips and shavings (often from heirloom rings), sand, pebbles or even a different, contrasting wood. The options really are infinite.

How durable are your rings?

Our metal and carbon fibre rings with wood inlays are as durable as any conventional metal/carbon fibre ring – the wood inlay is purely decorative. In rare circumstances, it’s possible that the wood inlay could lift or crack, but if that were to happen, it would normally only ever occur in the first few months, once the wood is settling into its new environment and we would of course put that right. Please see full info below regarding the guarantees for our rings.

The method used to make our bentwood rings means that the grain of the wood is wrapped around the ring a number of times. This not only shows off the grain of the wood in all its glory, but it also gives the ring extra strength, making it very unlikely to break.

All bentwood rings are then sealed with a protective coating to prevent water from getting into the wood. So long as that coating isn’t compromised (i.e. a deep scratch going right down to the wood, which you ignore, thereby allowing water to get under the coating) then that won’t be an issue. It’s normal for that coating to show signs of wear over time and some customers do return their rings to us every few years for a refinish (which we can also do in the event of a deep scratch, before any damage is done to the wood).

We’d advise you to remove your ring if doing something which is really likely to damage it, but otherwise for day-to-day living, just leave your ring on and return it to us every now and then for a refinish (see FAQ below).

Obviously in the event of a freak accident, like dropping and driving over your ring (don’t laugh, it happened once), then one would expect a metal ring with wood inlay to fair better than a ring made completely from wood. However, even in a worst-case scenario such as that, we could still inlay pieces of the original ring into a new design, which we feel is a rather beautiful idea.

How do I look after my ring?

All of our rings are designed to last a lifetime, but the different styles of rings and materials used mean that some care and precautions will need to be taken to keep your ring looking at its best.

For metal and carbon fibre rings with wood inlays, the natural oils in your skin should stop the wood inlay from drying out or cracking. However we do recommend using a little balm or teak oil every few months, or if it starts to look dry.

As described above, for bentwood rings it is important that the waterproof finish is maintained in order to protect the structural integrity of the ring. If the finish were to get badly damaged and no action were taken, then this could allow water into the wood which would damage the ring from the inside.

We recommend you buy a pot of ring balm when you purchase the ring and that you treat it every month or so. We also offer a refinishing service so you can send it back to us for some tender loving care. The current price for that service is £75 including VAT and UK delivery.

Do the rings come with a guarantee?

Please rest assured that we take great pride in our after sales service and want you to be a happy ambassador for Eco Wood Rings for life!

For metal rings with woods inlays, the metal element comes with a lifetime guarantee (with the exception of silver, which has a two year guarantee). The wood inlays in this style of ring come with a five year guarantee. After that point, a charge applies to repair or replace the wood inlay, although this is an incredibly rare event. The current price for that service is £100 including VAT and UK delivery.

Bentwood rings come with a one year guarantee, during which time we include one free refinish. After this period a charge of £75 (including VAT and UK delivery) applies for a refinish/minor repair. In the event that a major repair is required then please get in touch and we will advise on options and costs.

Carbon fibre rings with wood inlays come with a one year guarantee.

All guarantees are valid from the date of purchase. After this period the relevant charge would apply to any refinish or repair. In the unlikely event that your ring is damaged beyond repair after the guarantee period, then we will always offer to remake it for you at a heavily discounted price.

How long will it take to make and how will it arrive?

Our normal time frames for rings are 4-8 weeks from the point of ordering to delivery. If purchasing a Collection design online, that is the date the order is placed through the website. For all other designs, ordered by email and online invoice, it’s the point at which we have received both your payment and completed order confirmation. If you need your ring/s in fewer than eight weeks, we might still be able to make your rings under our priority production service (subject to workload).

If you need your ring really really soon, then we do have a selection of sample rings here in a good range of sizes. We are often able to send these out straight away, then after the proposal/ceremony, you can return it to us and we will credit the original ring amount against the final design (less £10 for the additional P&P).

Please contact us to discuss your time frames further.

All our rings are sent by Royal Mail Special Delivery free of charge within the UK. We will advise you by email when your ring is ready to be sent with the exact delivery date (it will arrive before 1pm and will need to be signed for by someone at the property).

For overseas orders we use FedEx and charge £35 within the EU and £45 outside the EU. Once the shipment is set up we will send you tracking details so you can follow its progress.

How will my ring be packaged?

Our rings are lovingly packed into simple kraft card ring boxes with our logo embossed on the lid in rose gold. They are attractive boxes but if you’d like to upgrade to more of a presentation box, then we have a lovely range of wooden ring boxes available too.

The rings are delivered in unmarked protective packaging just in case discretion is important (which it often is!). There will be no indication as to who it’s from or what’s inside.

Can I get my ring engraved?

We offer an engraving service in all our metal rings with wood inlays, with a range of fonts available. The current price for this service is £60 including VAT. We can also include patterns, symbols and characters from other languages by laser engraving. Please contact us for further information and a quote for this.

For bentwood rings we offer woodburned inscriptions on the inside of the rings. The best woods to accommodate inscriptions (due to their grain patterns) are cherry, maple and walnut. If your ring isn’t made from one of these woods, then you will need to include one as a liner (which does create the opportunity to add contrast between the inside and outside of the ring). The current price for woodburned inscriptions is £50 including VAT.

Please note that we are not currently able to add inscriptions to carbon fibre and wood rings.

View the fonts available for metal rings with wood inlays here.

Can I see a sample of my ring before buying it?

All our rings, including pre-designed Collection rings, are made to order so we don’t have samples that can be sent out to customers before purchase. We hope that the pictures and descriptions we have on our website accurately describe our beautiful rings. The overwhelming feedback is that they’re even more impressive in real life than in the photos. However, if you’re unsure, please do get in touch with us. We do have a small range of sample rings and are happy to meet you to show you those and to talk through your design ideas further (see FAQ above).

How do I choose the right ring size?

All our rings are made using standard UK ring sizes, including half sizes. We have a number of loan ring sizing kits available, which can be ordered online here and sent to you. If you’re based overseas and struggling to get a confirmed UK ring size, or if you’re establishing the size required by more creative/secretive means (!), then we can also work off the internal diameter required. You can see how the different systems and measurements correlate in our Ring Size Guide.

It’s worth remembering that the weather can make our fingers swell or contract so try and make sure you get your finger measured when the weather is relatively mild, or perhaps even get a second opinion on a different day.

It’s also important that you take into account the width of the ring you plan to order, as it can affect the size needed, especially with getting the ring over the knuckle. Ideally you can try on a ring in the same size and width combination as you intend to order, to help ensure that your ring is a perfect fit.

What if it's not a perfect fit?

We hope that you will be delighted with your ring. As all of our rings are made to order, we are unable to accept returns and orders cannot be cancelled once confirmed. Please therefore ensure that you choose your ring carefully, especially the size. If necessary all of our bentwood rings and metal rings with wood inlays can be increased or decreased by up to one whole size - the current price for resizes is £80 for bentwood rings and £100 for metal rings with wood inlays.

Carbon fibre rings and bentwood rings with metal liners cannot be resized, but for these rings, as well as for any other ring which is out by more than one size, we will offer to take back the original and to remake it in the correct size at a heavily discounted price.
